Beat the rise in burglaries
It’s sad but burglars really love:
- An empty property
- One that’s unprotected – without an alarm or other security measures
- Easy access and an unobstructed ‘get away’ route to the rear or the side of the premises
So with rising burglary rates, we’ve put together some simple tips to help keep your property safe from intruders when you’re out.
1. Lock your windows before you go out
2. Leave a car in your driveway if you can whilst you’re out, it helps to give the impression you’re in when you’re not. Don’t, however, leave your car keys in a place that’s visible through your property’s windows.
3. Invest in timer switches so lights come on in your house when it gets dark.
4. Consider planting ‘spikey’ plants in areas of your garden which could present a good ‘escape route’ for a burglar. Try and make access to the rear of your property difficult.
5. Lock side gates with a secure lock, not just a simple bolt. Burglars love a dark, secluded and easy escape route so make yours difficult.
6. Invest in a burglar alarm – a basic one is no more than the cost of an HD TV. Don’t forget to routinely check the alarm’s working properly and turn it on when you go out.
7. Consider investing in security lighting – advances in LED bulbs means they’re a lot more energy efficient.
8. If you’re going away for a while, ask a friend or neighbour to check on the house, draw curtains at night and move any obvious build up of post left at the door.
9. Remove all valuables and precious items out of sight from your windows – you might want to invest in a safe for added extra protection. Again, keep this out of view.
10. Beware of callers at your door asking unusual questions. Take a note of their description and notify the Police or your Neighbourhood Watch. They could be a burglar on a reconnaissance
