Rise in Burglaries and Break-ins

How to protect your home when you're away

Recent reports in the local press and from our contacts in the Police suggest there has been a rise in  the number of break-ins and burglaries.  If you have to leave your house at any time (eg to go to work, for a business trip  or holiday) then make sure it's protected whilst your away.

Avoid it attracting the attention of potential intruders with our six simple tips.

Tip 1: Remove temptation that can be seen from outside your property.  Hide or lock away your visible valuables.  A safe is a great way to protect your most precious and sentimental possessions.

Tip 2: Check your alarm and/or security system is working properly and don’t forget to turn it on when you leave. Let neighbours have a contact number for you - just in case the alarm is activated when you are away.

Tip 3: Arrange for someone to remove any obvious build up of post if you're going to be away for some time.  If you have anything delivered regularly, such as milk, cancel it before you go.  If someone is coming in to keep an eye on your house whilst you are away, make sure they know how to activate the security alarm system. And don’t forget to tell neighbours who this person is (especially if you’re in a neighbourhood watch area).

Tip 4: If possible, leave a car in the drive and invest in timer switches for lights, which give the impression you are in when you’re out.

Tip 5: Lock all side gates.  Burglars love properties with easy exit routes.  Make sure yours poses a real obstacle course for them. For added protection, why not get automatic gates?

Tip 6: Consider CCTV - not only is it a great deterrent, new advances in technology mean you can view your home remotely over a secure web connection (even on your mobile phone) and check things are as they should be.
