Integrating large-scale fire and security services into The Royal Surrey’s Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre
When your new facilities will treat an additional 7,000 patients each year, there’s no margin for error in security or fire safety. Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust’s new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre required cutting-edge technology and full integration with its existing fire and security infrastructure.
The brief
The Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre is a £41.5m project that will help position Royal Surrey as one of Europe’s leading surgical centres. This three-storey facility, connected to the main hospital via a pedestrian bridge, will include six operating theatres, recovery areas, short-stay wards and a post-anaesthetic care unit when it opens in late 2026.
The challenge was to integrate comprehensive fire and security services into the Trust’s existing infrastructure. The lead contractors, MTX Contracts and Dowds Group, required a partner who understood the technical requirements and the specific demands of live healthcare environments.
The solution
Our contribution to this project includes:
- CCTV & access control: Installing Avigilon IP CCTV systems (internal and external) and Paxton Access Control to provide visibility and security management across the new facility.
- Fire safety: Installing over 800 fire detection points across a networked system of six Ampac Fire Finder Plus panels and six Smartview repeater units.
- Cabling systems: Installing the security data networks, and fibre optic and fire network cabling systems – over 25 of cabling in total.
- System integration: Connecting all new systems to Royal Surrey’s existing infrastructure, ensuring unified management and monitoring across the entire estate.
- Maintenance & aftercare: Providing ongoing aftercare and maintenance for CCTV, access control and door alarm systems.
The result
Due for completion in mid-2026, the Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre will build on Royal Surrey’s reputation in robotic and non-robotic surgery. Despite the project’s scale and complexity, we have delivered ahead of the project milestones. This, combined with our close collaboration between clients and suppliers, has supported a smooth project delivery to date.
