12 ways to protect your property and possessions in the longer nights

60% of burglaries happen in darkness. Protect your property with simple security measures to deter burglars such as locking gates, using alarms and CCTV, maintaining security lighting, checking window locks, hiding valuables, upgrading to app-enabled systems.

As the nights draw in and darkness falls earlier, it’s boom time for burglars as homes and businesses become more vulnerable to break-ins. Did you know that around 60% of burglaries take place under cover of darkness?

Yet taking simple security measures works. Here are 12 practical ways for you to keep your property safe this autumn and winter.

1. Lock your side gates properly

We’ll start with a simple one – don’t just bolt your side gates; lock them. Burglars love a dark, hidden route around the back of your property, especially one they can escape through quickly – make it difficult for them. Modern Bluetooth smart padlocks give you keyless convenience without compromising security.

2. Fill gaps in your perimeter with prickly plants

Got gaps in your fence? Fill them with evergreen, spiky plants like pyracantha, hawthorn or berberis. These create a natural barrier that’s uncomfortable to climb through and looks good year-round. It’s a simple landscaping choice that adds an extra layer of protection burglars would rather avoid.

3. Check your alarm works (and actually use it)

Most people recognise that alarm systems deter burglars, yet many of us forget the basics. Test your alarm regularly, remember to turn it on when you leave, and use the ‘part set’ mode at night to protect entry points while you sleep.

If it’s time to upgrade, get in touch for advice – modern intruder alarm systems come with  smartphone control and alerts with options for 24/7 professional monitoring for ultimate peace of mind.

4. Add CCTV with night vision

Research from the College of Policing shows that CCTV reduces property crime by 14%. Modern CCTV systems are packed with technology that gives you a clear picture in the dark  making them perfect for darker months. Position cameras where they’re clearly visible to help deter burglars.

5. Keep your security lighting in good condition

External lighting works hard at this time of year – it makes your home feel more welcoming when you arrive home in the dark, reduces safety risks and helps deter intruders by putting them in the spotlight. Give your lights a clean every few months (spiders love building nests in them) and consider smart lighting you can control from your phone.

6. Double-check every window lock

Your windows might be closed, but are they locked? Many people open kitchen and bathroom windows more regularly than other windows. This means they’re more likely to be left unlocked, making them a common entry point for burglars. Make checking all your window locks a weekly habit.

7. Pretend you’re at home

Criminals tend to avoid confrontation, which is why empty-looking properties are prime targets. Next time you’re away, use timers for lights in different rooms, leave a car on the driveway if you can, and ask neighbours to collect the post and draw curtains. This way, it will look like someone’s home, making opportunistic burglaries less likely.

8. Consider electronic driveway gates

If you have a driveway, electronic gates and entry systems signal that your property is well-protected. Modern systems integrate with smartphone controls, letting you manage access remotely and review who’s been through, helping you feel more at ease.

9. Hide your valuables

Nearly half of burglaries are opportunistic – criminals spot something tempting and act on impulse. Stay secure by keeping expensive items away from windows, and if you’re going away, store valuables in a security safe in a room protected by your alarm.

10. Don’t broadcast your holiday plans

Going on holiday may be exciting, but if you share your plans on social media, you risk advertising an empty property. Organised criminals actively monitor social platforms for exactly this information. Share your holiday photos when you get back, not while you’re away. Even countdown posts give criminals a helpful timeline.

11. Watch out for suspicious callers

Be cautious with unexpected visitors asking odd questions about your routine, neighbourhood watch or security measures. These could be reconnaissance visits. Note descriptions and vehicle details, then report to police or your local Neighbourhood Watch. Genuine callers won’t mind being verified.

12. Upgrade to app-enabled security systems

Modern integrated security solutions with smartphone apps transform how you monitor your property and delivery better overall security. Whether it’s intruder alarms, electronic gates, or monitored CCTV, app connectivity let you check system status, receive instant alerts, view live cameras, and control access – all from your phone.
